Later he entered politics, there he started promoting reforms for the Mexican people. However, he went into exile, during the military regime of Santa Ana. He later returned to help overthrow the dictator. Later, He resisted the French occupation and worked to overthrow Emperor Maximillian. During his presidency, he created a more democratic Mexico.
