That was because the King Akbar knew that being religiously intolerant would make people angry and this might be bad for the kingdom and he wanted for it to prosper and not be caught in civil wars. He was above all a supporter of arts and philosophy and all religious beliefs were considered to be up for study and understanding under his rule which is why the Hindus loved him even though he was a Muslim.
