The first shots were fired at the Battle of Fort Sumter. The battle was over a United States Sea Fort that was in South Carolina, a new Confederate State. Union soldiers camped in the fort for days, and the South fired on them. However, the only casualty was a horse.
The first shot of the civil war started in South Carolina in Charleston Harbor at Fort Sumter. It was a Fort held by the union forces. So the South fired upon them because South Carolina had seceded from the US and the Union forces where in the new "Confederate states of America"
