This occurred because there was a need for children to work on farms. The Neolithic revolution allowed more permanent settlements and this allowed for more babies which led to an increase in population that was not possible in the Paleolithic era. This forced women to stay in traditional roles of nurturing and handling affairs. Women could not work on farm or have more political or social roles in society due to this. In turn, men considered women subordinate to them and felt they should stay in the household and have little to no rights. An example of bias against women and negative male views of women can be seen in the Hammurabi law codex by saying that property should be led by husband/father and that a women's sexuality should be sacrificed to ensure legitimacy. This is seen in Babylonia.
