When focusing a specimen, you should always start with the SCANNING OBJECTIVE. The scanning power objective lens will magnify the specimen by a factor of 4, making it possible for you to view the specimen clearly. After this follow the next steps of microscope use, that is, lower the stage completely, place slide on stage, use course knob to focus, use fine knob if needed, determine magnification by finding the product of ocular and objective, draw your specimen, lower the stage and change objective.
