One-eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was somehow the cause of the war.

Respuesta :

I would say "logos" because this is dealing with the logic behind an argument or the reason explaining what was the primary reason for the civil war due to the black slaves concentrated in the southern states and equalling 1/8th of the whole population (of the US?) and representing a powerful interest presumably meaning that their powerful interest was not to be slaves anymore and gain the freedoms of the white people.
