A rectangle is 12 feet long and 5 feet wide. If the length of the rectangle is increased by 25% and the width is decreased by 20%, what is the change in the area of the rectangle?
The change in the area of the rectangle is
square feet.
Original area was as follows Area=L*W A=12*5 A=60 sq ft
If the length of 12 is increased by 25% do the following.
12*0.25=3
12+3=15
If the width of 5 is decreased by 20% do the following.
5*0.2=1
5+1=6
With these calculation we can now determine the new area
Area=L*W A=15*6 A=90 sq ft
With this information we now know that with the increase in length and the decrease in width the new rectangle is 30 sq ft larger than the original rectangle.
