Sand dunes are formed when the wind blows the sand, and it is deposited behind an obstacle. Sand particles accumulate, and sand dunes are formed.
They protect inland areas from water intrusion, high energy storms, winds, and waves.

Sand dunes are formed over many years when beach grass and other plants trap windblown sand.

As more and more sand becomes trapped, a dune expands to store more sand.

Sand dunes serve as sand reserves for beaches.

Sand dunes help protect inland areas from storm surges, floods, wind, and waves.
