Why were slaves so important for plantation owners in colonial America?

slaves were very important. 1) they grew and harvested the crops. 2) they did the hard labour of everything having to deal with the crops. they also were not expensive labour. they were "cheap" to take care of and were "willing" to do the work for their "freedom" (free time).
