I believe this would be the correct answer as to what the relationship between colonization and slavery in the 16th century is: As colonies grew, colonial powers increasingly relied on slaves for hard labor.
The more powerful these colonies became, the more manpower they needed. This is why, instead of having to pay people for their work, it was easier for them to just have slaves who worked for very little (if any) money, and would make the economy thrive.
