In order for us to answer this question, we must understand what the goal in the information given is. In essence, the article talks about a man, Edmud Spenser, a candidate for mayor in his city, whose home has been attacked with watermelons that have been launched at it, and his desire to pursue and punish the perpetrators, not as revenge, but because the law must be upheld at all times, regardless of circumstances. However, when we look at the language used, and the way the information is given, you can soon device the true purpose behind it; besides telling the events that took place on the 27th of January, and against whom these acts were perpetrated, the language and manner of writing points the reader to understand that the purpose of this narration is not just merely to relate a fact, but rather, to focus the attention on two topics: first, the man whose house was attacked is a candidate for mayor of the city, and the second one, the way in which this candidate decides to act, putting the law above anything else. In the end, the reader can see, especially through the last two lines: "This illustrates his desire to uphold law and order in the city. This is precisely the kind of mayor this community could hold", that the real purpose of this article is to: convince the audience to vote for Edmund Spencer, because through his actions, he showed that the city, and its laws, will always be safe in this man´s hands.
