Many birds and plants were almost made extinct prior to hurricane Iniki because of the introduction of invasive species including Banana Poka. The native plants dwindled and the native birds struggled to find a proper habitat and when the hurricane hit it really pushed both of them to the edge. Some of the birds that were close to extinction are the Hawaiian Duck, Hawaiian Coot, Kauai Akialoa, and the Kauai Thrush.
