Read the third stanza of "Because I Could Not Stop for Death." We passed the School, where Children strove At Recess – in the Ring – We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain – We passed the Setting Sun – Why does Dickinson most likely repeat the word “passed” three times in this stanza?

The repetition of the word "passed" apparently indicates a long journey with no stops and in fact the poem is about a gentleman caller who is death personified who takes the person in a chariot ride to the other world of death but first passes by nostalgic images of life.
