Why does fossil fuel use in the united states make the u.s. Vulnerable to the political wishes of foreign countries?

The United States gets fossil fuels from other countries as imports. Those countries could manipulate the U.S into doing things in order to receive the oil. That would make the U.S vulnerable of being manipulated to do the political wishes of foreign countries.
