Brake-pads in cars. The scratching strip on the side of a matchbox. The ridges on the soles of snow-boots.

The three devices or inventions that are designed to enhance friction are nails, cleated shoes, and brakes.

• The resistance that one object or surface encounters when moving over another is termed friction.

• Nails increase friction as they hold together by shear strength laterally and friction in the axial direction.

• The cleated shoes increase friction, as the spikes present on the bottom of the cleats enhance friction with the shoe and the ground.

• When one applies brakes, it makes the pads of the vehicle's brake touch the discs of the brakes resulting in friction between the discs and the pads, this friction prevents the motion of the wheels.

Thus, the three devices which are created to increase friction are nails, brakes, and cleated shoes.
