why did some asian nations become democratic while others were led by dictators or communist governments? (give long answer if possible)

 They came under the influence of western democracies like Britain and the US. India, for example, copied the British democracy; Japan got democracy from the US. In contrast China and north Korea were mainly influenced by the USSR and its system.
