The correct answer is D) The Italian people overthrew Mussolini and reclaimed control of their country.

The impact of the Allied defeat of the Axis powers in Italy was that the Italian people overthrew Mussolini and reclaimed control of their country.

On September 3, 1943, the Allied Forces invaded Italy under the leadership of Bernard L. Montgomery. Since the beginning of the year, Italian people wanted to overthrow Mussolini but the fascist's dictator had the total support of the Germans and there were plenty of Germany troops in the Italian territory. Mussolini finally was ousted on July 25, 1943, and General Pietro Badoglio took the leadership of Italy and reached a peace agreement of September 3. The invasion of Italy had begun.
