These comments are ironic because duncan comments on how "pleasant" macbeths castle seems to be. However, the audience knows that in actual fact the macbeths are plotting to kill duncan. in the second extract, Lady macbeth is flattering duncan to make him feel safe and welcomed so he will not suspect his death later on in the play.
