One of the greatest breakthroughs that the Native Americans achieved during the start of the second half of 20th century was that their respective lands were brought back to them. In addition, the federal government had started to provide financial aids to the tribal groups with regards to their agricultural lives.

The Native Americans fight for rights was a long drawan out process, which came to climax in the 1960s when the Law ICRA was passed.

Indian Civil Rights Act (ICRA)

This is also knowns as Indian Bill of Rights, through which Native Americans achieved many civil rights. The rights which was given to them are as follows:

  • Right to free speech, press, and assembly
  • Protection against self incrimination
  • Protection against cruel and unusual punishment
  • Protection from double jeopardy or ex post facto laws
  • Right to a jury trial for offenses punishable by imprisonment

Apart from this native Indians also gain right to live on their ancestors place.
