The articles of confederation was a disorganized, not well thought out mess that created more problems in terms of creating a government that "uniting" the states. The wanted the states to be as independent as possible, but that meant that the federal government was incredibly weak. Basically, each state was it's own mini-country. There became a need for a stronger federal government, and this lead to the Constitutional Convention, and they redid the articles of confederation into our current form of government.
