Peeta is traveling with the Careers in what initially appears to be an alliance with Katniss.
Later, when Katniss drops the trackerjack nest on the sleeping Career Tributes, it is revealed to be a ruse as he encourages Katniss to evacuate despite being sick from the bites.
What happens in chapter 12 of the Hunger Games?
Katniss is taken aback by Peeta's decision to join the Careers. She notices his bruises and deduces that he battled at the Cornucopia. The Career Tributes discuss killing while Peeta goes to check on the girl.
They are perplexed as to why Katniss received an eleven in training, and when Peeta returns, Katniss learns he hasn't informed them of her bow skills.
When the cannon goes off, the Careers take off. Katniss descends and resumes her journey. She discovers a rabbit while checking the snares she laid the day before, boils it, and then eats it as she proceeds in the opposite way as the Careers did.
She becomes increasingly weary and dehydrated as she progresses.
