Oxygen has been the 8th element of the periodic table with the presence of 6 valence electrons. In order to attain a stable electronic configuration, the oxygen atom has to gain 2 electrons.

However, the oxygen present in nature has been diatomic oxygen. The oxygen atoms have the same electronegativity and have been unable to form the polar bond. However, the equal sharing of the electrons in between the atoms results in the formation of a non-polar covalent bond.

Thus in the structure of the diatomic atom, the oxygen atom forms a non-polar covalent bond with another oxygen atom, to become reactive and stable in nature.
