During the election of 1912, Democrat Woodrow Wilson was not the most popular candidate at the time. In fact, Theodore Roosevelt and the Republican Party were the dominant force. Unfortunately for him, there was a disagreement in the Republican Party concerning with policies, and two candidates ran for the elections.

The Republicans had two candidates, Theodore Roosevelt who controlled the Progressive Party, and William H. Taft who ran for the Republicans. These proved to be very costly for the Republican Party because their votes were divided between its two candidates, thus allowing Mr. Wilson to win the elections.

The Progressive Party ran by Roosevelt wanted to attract voters based on the principle that they were helping the average American. Unlucky for Roosevelt, Mr. Wilson´s Party had similar ideology an eventually, more people voted for him, thus becoming President.  The final vote count went like this: Wilson 6,296,547 and Roosevelt 4,118,571. In third place was Taft with 3,486,720.

Republican support was divided between two candidates.

Further Explanation:

The reason that Woodrow Wilson was able to win two consecutive presidential elections during the era of Republicans between 1913 to 1921 was that there was inner division going on between the members of the Republican party. This issue started back in the year 1909 when two time President of the U.S Theodore Roosevelt supported William Howard Taft for the Presidential elections of 1913 but following Taft’s election, his actions did not impressed President Roosevelt and he challenged Taft’s nomination during the Republican National Convention which took place in year 1912.

Supporters of Theodore Roosevelt and Taft got divided into two groups and when Republican party denied canceling the nomination of William Taft for the Presidential post, Theodore rallied along with his supporters and launched a third-party bid and that led to division of votes during the elections and because of that Democratic candidate, Woodrow Wilson was able to win the Presidential election.
