The Great Migration was an event when around 6 million African Americans were reallocated from the rural south to the cities of North and Midwest from the west. Great migration took place between the period of 1916 to 1970. The reason behind great migration was that the people from the Southern part of the United States were driven from their homes due to unsatisfactory economic opportunities and harsh laws related to segregation. Many of those migrants were influenced by the growth of north as they wanted to take advantage of the Industrial growth there and in New York especially, there was a shortage of industrial labor and the people who migrated from South to New York were provided with better working opportunities.  

But due to migration taking place in these cities to vast extant with years, It made competition for employment as then there came a case when there were fewer vacancies and more applications and not only that, the competition for the living space was also increasing as cities were becoming crowded.
