Well, world war 1 war earlier than the rest of the war's of course, so there were not nearly as many medical advancements. There were few doctors, and even fewer that knew what they were doing. There was not much effective medicine or ways to heal bones etc. Also, people were already weak and dying at young ages back then, being injured was deadly to them.
