Answer;

Heat engines have efficiencies less than 100%

One consequence of the third law of thermodynamics is that Heat engines have efficiencies less than 100%.

Explanation;

  • Thermodynamics involves the study of how heat or thermal energy is transformed or converted to other forms of energy.
  • According to the third law of thermodynamics the entropy of all crystalline solids that are perfect is zero at absolute temperature. therefore as the temperature of a system moves towards absolute zero then its entropy will move to zero which will be a constant, for pure perfect crystalline solids.
  • Heat engines convert heat energy or thermal energy to mechanical energy. Heat engines have efficiencies less than 100%, because some heat energy is not converted to work.  Efficiency of a heat engine depends on the absolute temperature at which the eat enters.

A consequence of third law of thermodynamics is that it violates the Second Law of thermodynamics as a machine is not 100% efficient.

Further Explanation:

Law of Conservation of Energy state that “Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed but only it can be transferred from one to another form and also called first law of thermodynamics.

The first law of thermodynamics state that "the amount of change in internal energy [tex]\Delta E[/tex] of one system is expressed as sum of heat q that transferring across its boundaries of the system and work done w on system by surroundings":

[tex]\Delta E = q + w[/tex]

The second law of thermodynamics state that "When energy transform from one to another form, the entropy or disorder in a closed system is increases."

The Third Law of thermodynamics states that "when the temperature of the crystal is equal to absolute zero i.e. [tex]0\text{ K}[/tex] then the entropy of a perfect crystal is zero."

Concept:

The consequence of the Third Law of thermodynamics is that “it would require an infinite number of steps to reach absolute zero, which is not possible but if there is some possibility to reach absolute zero, it would violate the Second Law of thermodynamics, because if we had a heat sink at absolute zero, then we could build a machine that would be 100 percent efficient.”
