Why does the handle of a saucepan get hot when it is on the stove?

Metal is a conductor of heat energy. When the bottom of the saucepan heats up, its metal atoms vibrate. Nearby atoms start vibrating because they are bumped into by the heated atoms. Heat moves through the saucepan to the handle.
