One of the major problems of monoculture farming is the variety of species. If there are no varieties in the producer level in the food chain all other organisms within the ecosystem would be affected. This is a common practice in both industrial and organic farming. Though both kinds of farming have seen efficient increase in harvests, the overall effect of this type of farming has a direct effect in the biodiversity of a particular area.
According to the article, there are several problems with monoculture farming. When farming this way, there is a single crop that is not genetically diverse. Similarly, this crop is less able to adapt to environmental changes, and less able to fight off diseases. With monoculture farming, crops may be subject to total loss or extinction.
