What was the purpose of the Spanish and Roman Inquisitions?

First, Spanish Inquisition was the harshest Inquisition, and
they went after heretics like Jew and Muslims, then later Protestants. Lastly, the Roman Inquisitions tried people in a more organized, and tried to alleged witches. Also, they would use toture to get Protestants to recant their religions. Hope it help!
