These reforms allowed the participation of all free men in the decisions of the government. On the other hand, the Roman Republic started when the Romans defeated the Etruscans in 509 BCE. In the Roman Republic, the citizens elected their representatives to make the laws.

The correct answers are:

2) In Rome, only men with money and property could vote.

3) In Greece, all men were allowed to vote.

4) In the Roman Senate, the most powerful part of the government, all senators were patricians.

  • The Roman government system was a Republic during a long period. During that time, people who had the most power were aristocrats, patricians, and landowners. People were divided amongst different classes: patricians, soldiers, plebeians and slaves. Patricians were the upper-class noblemen who were wealthy, owned land and held high positions in the Roman government. On the Roman Senate, power was controlled by the patricians and was the second in command. It had four assemblies, one for the city, one for the military, one for common people and one for citizens. But the representatives of the assemblies had to be full citizens. Full citizens mean men and of age. Women were excluded from voting procedures, neither slaves and freedmen could participate.

  • In Greece - Athenian democracy - things were different. Male citizens could vote on all decisions that affected the city. Women and children were not allowed to vote, slaves and foreigners - metics - were also banned from participating in government. Any male adult citizen over 20 could be elected. Different from the Roman government, the Greek democracy had the assembly, that had members that were not elected by attended by right when they chose.
