Modernization was meant to enrich the country and strengthen the military. During this time, Japan's relationship with the larger world grew more powerful and dynamic, since trade was greatly increased.
Initially the country, due to its geographic placement, was completely cut off from the outside world. Then the Dutch began trading with it and trying to convert the Japanese to Christianity. The Japanese people hated the outsiders at first but eventually it learned to use the shipping to enhance its worldwide economy.
