A. Describe the mass, charge, and location of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom. B. How do protons, neutrons, and electrons determine the properties of an atom (what is the ROLE of each particle)?

Respuesta :

Answer :

Explanation for Part A :

There are three subatomic particles. The subatomic particles are protons, neutrons and electrons.

Mass : The mass of proton and neutron are same which is equal to 1 amu (atomic mass unit) and the mass of an electron is equal to the 0 amu.

Charge : The protons are positively charged, electrons are negatively charged and neutrons has no charge (neutral).

Location : The protons and neutrons are present in the center of the nucleus and the electrons are located outside the nucleus.

Explanation for Part B :

Role of proton : As we know that the protons are positively charged. So, it attracts the electrons. The protons combine with the electrons and neutrons to make atoms.

Role of neutron : As we know that the neurons are neutral and present in the nucleus. So, it prevents the repulsion between all the protons.

Role of electron : As we know that the electron is negatively charged. So, it attracts the protons which is positively charged that means electrons balance the positive charge of protons which is present in the nucleus.

Protons are positively charged, whereas electrons are negatively charged. The number of protons and neutrons indicates the mass of the atom.

Protons, neutrons and electrons

In a given element, the number of protons is defined as the atomic number, whereas the number of protons and neutrons is called the atomic mass.

  • In an atom, the number of negatively charged electrons is equal to the number of positively charged protons.

  • In an ion element, the number of electrons less the number of protons is equal to its charge (either negative or positive).

In conclusion, protons are positively charged, whereas electrons are negatively charged. The number of protons and neutrons indicates the mass of the atom.
