Great Zimbabwe is a medieval city, which was the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe during the Late Iron Age. At its peak, the city could have housed up to 18,000 people. As it is believed that the capital was located here, the city is believed to have served as a royal palace and seat of government.

Great Zimbabwe was a center for trading, and its wealth was mostly acquired thanks to the trade of ivory, and more importantly, gold. Some estimates indicate that more than 20 million ounces of gold were extracted from the ground.
