Freedman's Bureau
- established in 1865
- help former slaves and poor whites in the South after the Civil War
provided food, housing and medical aid
- established schools and offered legal assistance
attempted to settle former slaves on Confederate lands confiscated or abandoned during the war
- was shut down in 1872

African American were given the chance to have an education and legal counsel. They were given equal treatment and opportunities in these area.
