Korematsu v United States (1944) is a controversial Supreme Court case. It discussed the constitutionality of internment camps for Japanese Americans during World War II. The ruling declared that internment was constitutional.

The court's view was that the risk of espionage and the need to defend against it outweighed the rights of Japanese Americans. In 2011, the DoJ filed an official notice, accepting that the Solicitor General's defense at the time had been erroneous.

During the initial days of world war 2, President of United States, Franklin Roosevelt issued and executive order which was known as Executive order 6066 and according to this order he authorized the military of United States to ban people who belonged to Japanese ancestry regardless of their citizenship who belong from the areas of West coast as it deemed important to the national security. Because of this order they were forced to leave their homes. and were made to stay in internment camps throughout the period of Conflict. It was then American born citizen who was of Japanese Ancestry named Fred Korematsu who denied the order and said that he won’t be leaving his house and because of his denial, he was charged in violation of the exclusion order.This case went to U.S Supreme court of United States as Korematsu v. United States and Supreme court ruled,  6-3 in the majority of United States as it held that the exclusion order by President was constitutional and further the court refused to address the larger question that arise which was regarding the legality of Japanese Detention camp program.
