Adding energy to a matter causes a physical change. Head to water becomes vapor--taking energy away also causes physical change, (water becoming ice,) when heat is the energy being removed.
Factors that cause a change in state of matter are; Temperature, Pressure, and volume. As temperature increases, the state of matter normally goes from Solid, liquid, to gas. This process is endothermic, because it is absorbing energy.
As it loses temperature, the state of matter goes from Gas, to liquid, then solid. This is exothermic, because it is losing energy.
