Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery because it would inspire slaves in the South to aid the Union because if the Confederate States won then the 13th Amendment would not apply to the new Confederate States. This would mean that Southern slaves would remain slaves. So in short, Lincoln used it as a war tactic to gain more support from slaves and abolitionists and African Americans.
