The Dunkirk operation was the evacuation of allied soldier from the harbour and beaches of Dunkirk during the second world war. It lasted from 26th May to 4th June 1940. The allies had agreed for this operation because a large number of French, Belgian and British soldiers were surrounded by German troops during the Battle of France. More than 900 ships participated in the evacuation and managed to evacuate 200,000 British and 140,000 French soldiers. A large number of fishing and pleasure boats along with some large ships were used for evacuation.
