The rules and the language of the oath suggest that the boys are gullible, because they describe the oath as "beautiful" but they don't understand the severity of it. Tom tells them they have to kill people and collect ransoms, but they don't even know what a ransom is. Most of the oath is based off of fictional stories Tom and the boys have read.
