Landscape orientation is whenever the paper is held horizontally rather than vertically. Portrait style can be though of as "hot-dog" style, while landscape style can be though of as "hamburger" style. For making a three column brochure it is useful to fold the paper horizontally, so that the columns can be wide enough.
