The United Kingdom, France, and Israel fought against _____ over rights to the Suez Canal.
Syria
Russia
Egypt
Sudan

Respuesta :

The answer is Egypt.

The correct answer is the third one: Egypt.

The Suez crisis was a military conflict that took place in Egypt in 1956 between the alliance formed by the United Kingdom, France, and Israel against Egypt. The Suez Canal links the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It is of vital importance for the transportation of oil from the Persian Gulf to Europe and, therefore, it is a geo-strategic point.

In 1956 the new Egyptian elected president, Gamal Abdel Nasser, nationalized the Suez canal, which until then was under British and French administration. The French and British were outraged since this policy harmed their interests and they decided to form a coalition to win back the control over the canal. Israel adhered to this coalition because the Egyptians blocked their access to the Red Sea, and also because Nasser was a relevant leader of the Arab world, an instigator of guerrilla war against Israel, and an important threat for Israel.
