Read this quote from a campaign speech by Eugene Debs. “I am not a labor leader. I don't want you to follow me or anyone else. If you are looking for a Moses to lead you out of the capitalist wilderness you will stay right where you are. I would not lead you into this promised land if I could, because if I could lead you in, someone else could lead you out.” What conclusion can be drawn about Eugene Debs’ beliefs after reading this quote?

For one, it looks like he's a Communist. Secondly, he believes that people who are willing to follow a leader can not be trusted to stay loyal.

Debs had moved on from his days as a labor organizer.

Eugene Victor Debs (1855 – 1926) was an American socialist, and one of the founding members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). He was also the candidate of the Socialist Party of America for President of the United States in several campaigns. Furthermore, he´s well-known for his work with labor movements.
