This metabolic path occurs when the glucose is oxidated to piruvate (glycolysis) and this, instead of enter the mitochondria, is reducted to lactate in the cytoplasm. The main objective is to re-oxidate the NADH + H to NAD+ to allow continue with the glycolysis (which need NAD+ to continue).
