Jim Crow laws were state or local laws that allowed for the development of seperate public and private facilities for black and white citizens. This included things like schools, restaraunts, water fountains, etc. These laws were a significant part of American society for nearly 6 decades. The ending of these types of laws started with the Civil Rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's, with one of the most important events being the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling that stated that separate but equal facilities for black and white students was a violation of the 14th amendment.
