An expert audience would be one that is extremely knowledgeable about the subject you are dealing with. It is unlikely that these people would need a lot of background information in order to understand your research, as they are so well-acquainted with the area of study already. However, an intermediate or novice audience is likely to need some, or a lot, of background information if you want them to comprehend your research.
