The United States' midwestern states of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois passed a number of laws known as the Granger Laws in the late 1860s and early 1870s.
The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, a group of farmers, had a major role in promoting the Granger Laws. The Granger Act's primary objective was to control grain elevator and railroad firms' escalating fare charges following the American Civil War. In the states of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois, Granger statutes were passed. Farmers who are members of the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry supported the Granger laws. The Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 was passed as a result of challenges to the Granger restrictions before the Supreme Court.
