The novella has been thoroughly examined by literary critics, who have provided numerous interpretations. Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a "monstrous vermin." He initially thinks the transformation is momentary before gradually pondering what it might signify. While lying on his back and unable to move, Gregor thinks about his life as a travelling salesman and textile merchant, which he characterises as being full of "temporary and perpetually moving human bonds, which never spring from the heart."
