The Archaic period of Mesoamerican chronology is when agriculture first appeared there (8000–2000 BC).
The Early Hunters of the late Pleistocene era (50,000–10,000 BC) lived nomadic lifestyles at the start of the Archaic period, surviving off of hunting and gathering. However, as the hunter-gatherer micro-bands in the area started to cultivate wild plants, the nomadic way of life that characterized the late Pleistocene and the early Archaic gradually changed into a more stationary way of life.
The cultivation of these plants gave the Mesoamericans security and enabled them to increase surpluses of "starvation foods" close to their seasonal camps, which they could use when hunting was difficult, there was a drought, or there were not enough resources available. Plant cultivation may have begun on accident or with deliberate intent.
