To begin we'll establish that there were three Punic wars between Rome and Carthage. The first one was because Rome wanted control of Magna Graecia. The second resulted in a Roman victory but not before Hannibal conquered Roman territory. When the third war took place Rome had more power than Carthage, but it was still a threat to Rome. Rome won the final war as well.
Answer:
The main reasons that the Punic wars began was because Romans were growing more confident in their army and were expanding their territory, Carthage was a threat to the Roman empire, Carthage decided whether or not certain Roman ships could sail in only certain parts of the Mediterranean sea, Rome grew resentful of their power. Because of these things and events the Carthaginians did like control Romes ships Rome decided to start to drive out the Carthaginians, the Romans started by driving out the Carthaginians out of Sicily, they emerged victorious and gained control over Italy. The main leader in the second Punic war was Hannibal, he was raised to despise Romans, when he was younger his father took him to a temple and told Hannibal to swear that he would spend his life trying to destroy Rome. Hannibal was a great leader and he knew that the Romans were growing a stronger Navy as the last year Carthage had a stronger Navy, because of this he decided to attack by land. Because of this Hannibal traveled through Spain, he traveled North then he went South to Italy and attacked by land. During the journey the some soldiers froze to death and the tribesmen attacked them whenever they had the chance, when they emerged to Rome many of their soldiers had died. But this didn’t stop Hannibal, he launched attack after attack on Rome and destroyed Sicily, every mother had either a son, father or brother who had died fighting for Rome, because of all of these attacks on Romes homeland, Rome decided to attack Carthage. Hannibal had to rush to his homeland, but the Romans had defeated Hannibal's army and destroyed Carthage, Hannibal tried to raise trouble and rebuild Carthage but the Romans stopped him, he eventually died by poisoning himself through a ring he carried, he would not surrender to Rome, he would rather have died. 50 years after the second Punic War Carthage began to grow rich and powerful, Rome saw a threat again, one of the Roman statesmen known as Cato ended every speech he made with Carthago Delenda Est «Carthage must be destroyed». And so war broke out again, Rome emerged victorious and went around killing the Carthaginians, the population of Carthaginians went from 250,000 to 50,000. The rest who were left alive were enslaved.
