The Zimmermann Telegram was a letter that German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmerman addressed on January 12, 1917, to the German embassy in Washington, D.C.

If the United States entered the war in Europe, Zimmermann urged the German ambassadors to visit the Mexican government and propose an alliance between Germany and Mexico. The Germans proposed the following in exchange for Mexico's cooperation: "an understanding on our part that Mexico is to retake lost territory in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona." Additionally, Zimmermann claimed that on February 1st, Germany intended to begin unrestricted submarine warfare, which may push the Americans into war with Germany.
